18-254 Small Turkey Tail Point

18-254 Small Turkey Tail Point made from Indiana Horn Stone ball chert . These unique points were a product of the Red Ocher Culture of the Ohio Valley which marked the transition between the Late Archaic and Early Woodland periods. One of their traits was to bury caches of well made points of several types, the Turkey Tail being one of them. This point was named for the shape of its base which resembles the tail of a dressed turkey just before he goes into the roaster!  Most of these points were made from ball cherts of the region, such as Indiana Horn Stone, Kentucky-Sonora, and Dongola chert. This is a small example of the type. They get much bigger than this, and more expensive too!  Length, 3 7/16 inches. Price, $15.
