18 D-644 Type IV-A Dagger

18 D-644 Type IV-A Dagger made from heat treated Springfield Burlington chert. This is a very large dagger for the material and because of the expansion of the handle toward the pommel it has to be classed as a IV-A. These were a transitional type between the Type III with a straight handle and the later "fish tail" handled daggers with flaring pommels. This one has single stage punch stitching on both handle faces and is very well executed with the show side a little longer and more even than the back side which is done as good as, if not better, than on the originals. As on some of these early transition daggers, more like the Type III, the pommel is left "wild" with the original preform surface showing and it has no side and pommel stitching like what might be found on the later IV-As. The blade was percussion flaked with a considerable amount of pressure finish.  This dagger is well balanced and feels great in the hand. I almost hate to let it go! Size, 9 1/4  inches. Price, $185.
