20TH
CENTURY LITHICS 1988 This was our first attempt
at a periodical publication that was supposed to be a biannual, but only 1000
copies of this first issue were printed before we launched CHIPS news letter in
1989 that later become a quarterly magazine. Nothing like it had ever been done
before, and along with The Art Of Flint
Knapping book who knows how many read these and got their start in flint
working? Herein, is a snapshot of the state-of-the-art as it was over 30 years
ago. However, much of the tips and advice found in this first publication is
still true and useful today. Giving the printing technology of the time this
was a wonder. Val did most of the work the old fashioned way from typesetting
on a Tandy TRS 80 computer with a daisy wheel printer to cutting and pasting the
layout on top a light box to produce a camera-ready dummy for photographing for
the offset plates. With all the work that went into it in mind I decided to run
a reprint and make it available again to a new generation of knappers. Crazy,
but it only took me a day to do the high resolution scans of the pages from the
best copy I still had and build a print ready file using my Publisher program.
The printing is done on my new Ricoh copier which, with the exception of the
few photos that were not the best to begin with, all else, including the many
line drawings by Val and others, is as good as the original offset job! In this
volume there are 19 articles, including the first I wrote on Danish daggers and
axes, those by others about notching Thebes points, fluting Clovis and Folsom
points by indirect percussion, Texas tang knives, knapping bottle glass, lithic
materials from the Williamson Site, flints and cherts from Pennsylvania,
Arkansas Novaculite, flint-like materials from South America, three articles on
heat treating, and four pieces about knapping tools old, and new. Several of
the authors are no longer with us and this reprint is dedicated to their memory.
102 pages, comb bound, 8 ½ x 11. Price, $20.
