The 4th Edition of 1993 saw the last major revisions of the earlier texts until 2006 when two appendices were added for a 5th. These were intended to address some of the discrepancies between antler and modern copper tools and their use without doing a total rewrite. However, in the last 30 years so much has changed that a major rework was needed in order to eliminate any ambiguities while greatly expanding and further enhancing the original text. What is new is more on tools, both traditional and modern, and the differences in their use for both percussion and pressure, more on the intricacies of the production of North American bifaces including the most comprehensive overview of notching types, tools, and techniques ever presented in a book on flint knapping, and a whole lot more! Even with these new additions and embellishments the mission of the original work still remains the same. Herein are no pie-in-the-sky theories; all has been tested by me, and many others, and found to be true. Like the others in the Master Knapper’s Guide Series these first Art of Flintknapping books will be printed in house on my Ricoh professional color copier until the remaining 5th editions are sold out after which they will then be printed in mass with saddle stapled black covers.
