ABOUT PRIMITIVE ARROWS
About primitive arrows made by D.C. Waldorf
Way back in the mid 70’s to mid 1980s we made a large number of primitive arrows that were sold separately through our catalog and along with the bows I made that were often housed in elaborate quivers and bow case sets made by Val. I stopped making the bows a long time ago and the arrows as well. Recently I was asked if I could still make some arrows for a regular customer who wanted some for his collection. So, I got out the stuff and made them. Was a lot of fun and brought back some fond memories of the good old days. Since I still have some shafts and feathers left I will continue making some arrows until all is used up. The shafts will be milled Port Orford cedar, or ramin wood dowels. Some will be the shorter, 24 inch, Plains Indian arrows with “lightning groves” cut into the shafts, usually three in number equally spaced around the shaft as best I can. The grooves may be colored red along with the black and red crests under the feathers. Also, there will be some longer, 27-28 inch Eastern Woodland arrows without groves. The fletching will be ether turkey wing, turkey tail, or Canada goose wing feathers. The lashings will be split electrician’s binding cord which is a good, stable substitute for animal sinew, and the glue will be plastic model cement. These look good and are far more weather proof than the natural materials. The heads will be various flints and of two basic types, corner notch, or side notch triangular type. Even though they are functional and guys have killed deer with arrows I made especially for that purpose, here it will be assumed these will be used for display only. [DO NOT SHOOT IN COMPOUND BOWS!!]They will be initialed, have a year date, and serial number matching that of the flint head. Again, I must repeat, the number of these arrows will be limited to when I run out of shafts and feathers, or I decide to quite fooling with them, so don’t hesitate if you want one or more! Note, I will pack these arrows in the tube as best I can, but if the feathers are ruffled a bit use this old archer's trick to restore. Steam the fletching in the stream from a tea kettle. Don't hold to close to the spout, move around, and back off as soon as the feathers have returned to normal shape.
