21-312 DECATUR FRACTURED BASE POINT made from heat treated Buffalo River, TN, Fort Payne chert. These Early Archaic corner notch points of the “Kirk Series” have a unique feature. A small notch was made in the center of the base as a stop to prevent overshooting of the two burin flakes that were sent in from the corners to facet the basal edge. This formed a flat edge which mated with the flat in the bottom of a square nock cut in the shaft to receive the point. When glued and lashed this made for a very stable haft for a point with such a short stem. This one is about average size for the type with some beveling and serrations of the edges. Length, 2 3/16 inches. Price, $18.
