In this third Best of CHIPS we have 26 entries from CHIPS Volume 16, Number 1 through Volume 22, Number 3. Though fewer in number, the articles are longer and more in depth. There are 9 dealing with tools, from rock saws, copper boppers and hammer stones to pressure flakers, including D.C. Waldorf's extensive piece on “Copper Versus Antler.” Lithic resources covered are Australian Mookaite, Peoria chert, and some weird computer chip material. Those dealing with point types are: “Fluted Drills and Reamers from the Vail Site,” “Meadowood Points,” “Columbia River Gem Points,” ”Some Late Woodland Notched Points,” “Early Archaic Bifurcated and Lobbed Base Points,” Afton Points, and “Notching: An Overview” which is an extensive article on the different types of notches, how they were made and the tools used. Also, we have three very good articles on foreign points and tools: “Some Stone Knapping Traditions of Aboriginal Australia,” Marquardt Lund’s “Some European Palaeolithic Bifaces and Leaf Points,” “Death in a Cave” about composite bone and flint points, and his wonderful three part series on Egyptian Flint Work. Plus 18 Larry Scheiber cartoons! Comb bound, 117 pages, $22.
