About Eccentric Flints

Just about all later Stone Age cultures the world over did some “doodles” in flint, animal silhouettes, geometrical shapes, abnormally large odd-shaped ceremonial objects, and others. I have seen some animals from Egypt, functional fishhooks from Denmark, human heads from Tennessee, lizards from the upper Midwest, a “snowflake” or “star” out of a cave in the Great Basin, and I have made a few Christian crosses and one eagle, but no one made eccentric flints in mass like the Maya of the Classical Period, AD 250 - 900! The majority of the few eccentrics I’ve made to date have been copies of these Mayan pieces. After 60 years of chipping I still consider myself in the apprentice stage when it comes to making these, however, I’ve been making more of them, and getting better at it! So far my targets have been scorpions, scarabs, spiders, sun discs, close-entry crescents, closed rings, and a couple of fairly elaborate notched blades, some with god, or chief heads with fancy head dresses. The human head ones are a stretch! I’m pretty proud of the “survivors”! These take the boredom out of knapping and take about three times longer to make than a same-size common projectile point. So, don’t choke when you see the price! I hope I can make enough to keep a few in this new category on this new site.
